Abstract
This study investigated the effects of group art therapy on the self-esteem and school adjustment of adolescents with poor school adjustment. The study participants were chosen from the students taking a school-offered help program called "Nourish your dream" at a college-bound high school. They had shown signs of poor school adjustment or had been disciplined. 18 students(a control group of 9 and an experimental group of 9) who and whose parents agreed to participate in the study were chosen for the study participants. The group art therapy program consisted of 15 sessions. It ran twice a week, each session about 90 minutes long. The instruments were a self-esteem scale, a school maladjustment scale, and kinetic school drawing. An analysis of covariance was used to analyze the data. First, the study found that group art therapy was effective in improving the self-esteem of the participants. Second, group art therapy was effective in improving the school adjustment of the participants. Third, kinetic school drawings by the participants before the start of the therapy program revealed that the participants often fell asleep during the class, were scolded by the teacher, showed little interest in their school life, and had a negative relationship with their teacher. However after the program, they involved themselves more actively in their school life and showed positive change in the relationship with their teachers and peers. These findings suggest that group art therapy was effective in improving the self-esteem and school adjustment of the participants.
